A National Mis-Creativity Index


Have you wondered how much of economic production is simply waste?

Have you wondered how many products are trite and useless?

Have you wondered how much of our celebrated industrial creativity is actually “Mis-Creativity”?

What we might need in the developed nations is a National Mis-Creativity Index.

A way of measuring how much of our economy is actually devoted to false creativity. This would include creativity that is actually either imitative, destructive, mediocre, superficial, trivial, manipulative, stolen, shallow, exploitive, euphoric, distracting, addictive, entrancing, standard lowering, wasteful and so on.

3500 square foot houses, SUVs, toxic fast food, military production for Middle East wars, luxury products for the 1% and much more.

And what about all that junk we store in our 2 car garages that we really never needed?

What would you think that the size of this mis-creative output would be? What fraction of the US economy for instance is dominated by the mis-creative?


Another way to put this is this: Is the US dollar a unit of economic creativity or a unit of economic Mis-Creativity?

A National Mis-Creativity Index would give us statistics on many industries and products. It might give us a sobering assessment of our true spending habits and where corporations actually invest their money.

A National Mis-Creativity Index might give us hints as to which direction we should take our economy and which direction we should not continue to pursue. One thing we do not want to do is revive those industries that extol and fabricate the mis-creative, we cannot afford to waste any resources during our economic recovery in certain industries, because we do not have the luxury of too many “W” shaped recoveries in the future.

Dividing products into creative and mis-creative is a helpful exercise because it forces us to select and reject, choose and plan, prioritize and advance, and redefine ourselves as Human beings and not as consumers.
